Truly, for a man to choose to serve his beloved is a very classical romantic gesture.

When you think of submissive men, I want you to think of white knights on chargers; To thee my lady I pledge my troth, and I shall serve thee all my days.

There are many famous romantic stories where the Lady puts her knight through absolute hell, to prove his service and devotion to her. That's the basic concept of a quest; go do weird and extreme things to add to the honor of the Lady, and to show how tough you are. (and so add to the honor of the Lady.)

When we look to nature, in monogamous relationships, most often the purpose of the male is to protect and support the female and the children. Nature's prime directive is experimenting with DNA combinations.

The reason that some female spiders and praying mantis' eat their mate, is because he can best support her and the offspring with the nutrition of his body. If he is fat and healthy, she will have stronger offspring, and his DNA will survive, to produce another generation of fat males who are chosen to breed because they look tasty to their future mate.
    They love them so much, they don't need ketchup.
   Some species of male praying mantis, in fact, cannot ejaculate until they have had their head ripped off. (METAPHORICALLY SPEAKING, I know some human males who are built similarly.)

Archaeologists tell us that in primitive times, we lived in a Matriarchal society. Humans believed Gaia, Earth Goddess, was their Mother, and they revered Her, respected Her, and tended to Her ways.

Then we moved into a patriarchal society. The patriarchal attitude is that Earth is property, here to be plundered.

We see the results of that society in some of the environmental disasters we have now.

I think the earth would like it if we went back to a Matriarchal attitude. In fact many predictions in many cultures suggest that we are about to do exactly that.

And certainly, I can have a lot of respect for gentlemen who dedicate themselves to the Goddess, and put themselves in service to women and children.

I also want you to keep in mind those same knights regularly beat the crap out of each other!

Matriarchal spirituality forbids one woman's son to kill another another woman's son. Mothers forbid their children to make war.
