Published yesterday, the study reveals the first genetic basis for differences in the way that men and women behave.
The find suggests reasons why men generally make better warriors than women, why young boys can be more of a handful than girls, and why boys are more vulnerable to developmental disorders auch as autism.
Whereas men have to learn social skills, women are programmed to pick them up from birth in the same way people are programmed to acquire language. Wnat is more, women inflict the curse of social inadequacy on men by "switching off" the gene in their eggs before passing it on to sons.
The findings were published in the British scientific journal Nature by a team headed by Prof. David Skuse, of the institute of Child Health in London, and Dr. Nina James, of the Wessex Regional Genetics Laboratory in Salisbury. They provide a striking example of a phenomenon called "imprinting", where only one of the two copies of a gene inherited from our parents is switched on by the body.
The "feminine intuition" gene or genes lie on the X chromosome. However, it is only the version of the gene that is inherited from the father that is switched on.
Normally, women inherit two X chromosomes, one from each parent. Thus women can inherit the active gene ironically from their fathers.
On the other hand, man have just one one X chromosome, which is always inherited from the mother. Due to imprinting, this is turned off. Thus, the single X chromosome in men has a silenced version of the gene promoting good social behavior.
"What we might call feminine intuition - the ability to assess a social situation, by observing nuances of expression, voice and so on - that set of skills is of genetic origin and seems to be nothing to do with hormones", said Skuse.
Boys have to learn social skills, he said. "If they are not taught them, they won't pick them up.
Both James and Skuse ruled out the possibility that, when the gene or genes resposible have been found, a drug could be designed to instil female intuiltion into mem.
"I think it unlikely we could find a way of removing the imprinting", he said.
There had to be an evolutionary advantage that cause women to pass this genetic deficiency on to their sons.
"Boys are, in this respect, a blank slate on which social skills are written. If you want to socialize boys according to a social norm, you want to recruit them into an army or hunting party or football team, it is and advantage to have those boys socially unskilled so that the dominant male in that group can impose a set of social mores."
Lacking social skills, they rely on how they are taught and told to behave. This means they can be made to fit into a particular social culture - like that found in the armed forces.
As a result, men are better hunters and soldiers. Their lack of sensitivity makes them more useful in the front line.
"There aren't many women whoe would be prepared to face the guns at Gallipoli (a First World War battle), for instance. Why did men do that?
"Being less empathic is an advantage if you want to go out and kill someone," said Skuse.

Men who have the gene that hasn't gotten awakened can sometimes get get very single-minded. They get into just one side of their brain. That brain' s got a goal. They persevere unto that goal, like a workaholic. And they don't get into their feminine side, into the emotional part of their brain. When this gene is awakensed, it brings out some of the feminine qualities of man. And turns an average human male into someone who is truly a hero and a gentlemen, in-service to other.
